Tourism Minister Highlights River Festival as Key to Boosting Siem Reap Visits

Phnom Penh: Siem Reap Province gears up for the 8th River Festival in 2024, an event endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism as a significant draw for visitors. Prak Sophoan, Governor of Siem Reap, along with officials, discussed preparations for the festival aimed at celebrating and conserving river resources while bolstering tourism in the river provinces of Cambodia.

The River Festival is more than just a celebration; it is part of a broader initiative to inspire community involvement in sustainable development and diversify tourism offerings in Cambodia. For Siem Reap, hosting the event aligns with the 'Visit Siem Reap 2024' campaign. The Minister of Tourism expressed that this event is a pivotal opportunity to showcase the tourism potential not only of Siem Reap but also of other riverine provinces. The festival is expected to attract a host of dignitaries, including Miss World delegates and a large influx of tourists, with accommodation booking rates soaring in anticipation.

The festival, themed "River for Peace and Development," is set to feature art performances, concerts by renowned national and international artists, and a fireworks display. The event, which will run from March 15 to 17, 2024, invites the public to revel in the festivities along the historic Siem Reap river, from Riverside Park to the Old Market.

The Minister urged all organizers to ensure thorough preparations, from environmental cleanup to street decorations, to offer a warm welcome to guests. He emphasized appropriate pricing for accommodations, food, and services by local businesses and promoted the showcasing of local products, explicitly requesting that beer not be advertised.

Governor Prak Sophoan also mentioned that beyond the River Festival, the Siem Reap Sankranti would continue the tradition, allowing guests to experience the Khmer New Year, further supporting the drive to attract tourists as part of Prime Minister Hun Manet's initiative for boosting tourism in 2024.

The upcoming River Festival, with its vibrant blend of cultural exhibitions and entertainment, stands as a testament to Cambodia's dedication to sustainable tourism development and cultural appreciation, inviting the world to explore the richness of Siem Reap and its riverside splendors.
